Economics and Land Use Planning in the
Greater Golden Horseshoe

Date:
Friday, October 28th, 2016
Time: 7:30 AM - 11:00 AM
Location: Sears Atrium, 3rd Floor, George Vari Engineering and Computing Centre, 245 Church Street, Toronto

About the Seminar:

Land use planning plays an important role in the economic lives of residents and businesses in the Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH). With the province in the midst of a review of four of its land use planning initiatives impacting the GGH, it is timely to assess land use planning in the region through an economic lens. Key economic objectives include the creation of jobs, increasing real incomes, providing a range of affordable housing compatible with underlying demand, promoting economic efficiency of the business sector and patterns of development, and promoting the economic revitalization of disadvantaged areas.

This half day seminar will examine:

  • The ways in which land use planning can promote economic objectives within a context of multi-objectives including environmental and social;

  • How well the current GGH planning system is preforming from an economic perspective;

  • The effects of proposed changes to the Growth Plan for the GGH; and

  • Changes to the current and proposed planning regime to better promote economic objectives.

This seminar will feature a keynote presentation by a recognized international expert in the field of urban economics and land use planning:

Paul Cheshire, Emeritus Professor of Economic Geography, at the London School of Economics is co-author of a 2014 book Urban Economics and Urban Policy: Challenging Conventional Policy Wisdom. The book's authors present new evidence on the fundamental importance of cities to economic well-being and to the enrichment of our lives. They also argue that many policies have been trying to push water uphill and have done little to achieve their stated aims; or, worse, have had unintended and counterproductive consequences.

Paul was recently named as one of the land use planning industry's most influential people in the United Kingdom. Apart from his academic work he has spent time as an advisor and as a consultant for the European Commission, the World Bank, the OECD, the UN and other international organisations as well as the UK government, including being a member of the Expert Panel for the Barker Review of the Planning system.
